Transporting an oven

Moving an oven can be a huge task, but hopefully this guide will shed some light on the process. It will give you some advice on how to remove the oven and how best to prepare the oven for transportation.

The first thing to do is to disconnect the oven; this process differs slightly between a gas and electric oven.

Electric

As with any job involving electrical equipment it is important to switch of the electricity at the mains before you undertake any work.

The best thing to do first is pull out the oven. This is done by opening the oven doors and locating the screws which secure the oven in place; these are usually found on the front edges of the oven. Unscrew these, this should free the oven and allow you to carefully pull it out.

Once out follow the electrical lead into the oven to locate the electrical supplies. Once the electrical supply is accessed remove the wiring, remembering to keep any items removed for reattachment at the other end of the move.

It would also be advisable to secure the now loose electrical wires left behind with insulation tape.

Gas

Removing a gas oven can be a little trickier. Again the first thing to do is to disconnect the gas and electric supply from the oven. To turn off the gas supply locate the gas inlet pipe into the oven and turning the valve on the pipe to stop the gas supply. For added safety we would recommend that you also turn off the main gas and electricity supply to the house.

To ensure that the gas is off turn the oven on and check no gas is released. Pull out the oven carefully, by removing the fixing screws, this should allow you access to the supply pipes behind. Find the electrical supply line to the oven and remove these as advised above.

Next remove the gas supply lines from the gas pipe, this will mean the oven is free from all connections. To finish the job the now exposed gas pipe line in the house should be capped, this is done by applying thread sealant to the end of the pipe and placing an iron cap on the end.

Transportation

To transport the oven it would be best to make sure the doors, any loose wires and the exterior of oven are secured. To do this you could tape the doors shut and tape the wires to the exterior of the oven.

The whole oven should be wrapped in soft material or blankets and secured, this will reduce the risk of damage especially to the exterior and glass fronted doors.

When booking a large item delivery service through Shiply or indeed anywhere, you should try and gauge whether or not the driver will be working alone or be accompanied by a “driver’s mate”. If they do work alone, it is often expected that you, the customer can assist at pickup and drop-off locations (especially if the goods are particularly large and/or heavy).

Reattachment

When at the destination make sure that the correct supply is available to the oven. If not you will have to hire a professional to install a gas or electricity supply. If the correct supply is available it should be simple to reattach the oven, however again if you encounter any problems it is advisable to consult a professional.
