Method of transport
There are two main options to consider when transporting a boat:
Hiring a professional skipper – Hiring a delivery skipper may be the most convenient option if retrieving your boat internationally, over a very long distance. The disadvantages are that it is likely to be more expensive and slower than the land based alternative on short-medium distances.
Boat transport service – Boat transport companies specialise in boat transportation, so are able to provide the necessary care and equipment that is paramount to a successful move. Where roads are available (i.e. on domestic/European moves) this is likely to be the cheapest and easiest option.
Selecting a boat transport company
Firstly, you will need to select a boat transport company. These businesses range from larger, commercial boat transporters to small family-run businesses, so prices vary significantly. Be sure to get as many quotes as possible in order to find the best deal, but do not overly sacrifice quality and experience for price.
Make use of Shiply’s feedback feature to ensure your boat transport provider has positive past feedback, or is otherwise of reputable standing. If you have any questions, do not be afraid to ask – boat transport providers will be happy to help.
Ensure your boat transporter has adequate experience and insurance to cover the cost of the boat and all eventualities. Always ask to see the insurance policy, and never accept “personal” insurance.
Remember to discuss all aspects of the transportation with the selected company – including pickup times, routes, drop-off times and whether cranes will be required at either end. Try to arrange drop-off during daylight hours, and when the recipient will be present, so the exterior of the boat can be expected.
Preparing for your boat transport
Ensure that your boat is ready for transport before your transporter arrives – it may take the best part of a day to prepare.
If preparation of the boat involves any form of dismantlement, it may be useful to take photographs to make reassembly easier.
Take the following steps to prepare for transportation:
Finally, make a written record of all damage/wear of the boat prior to transportation. Take photographs of the boat from all angles, so should any damage occur during transport, it can easily be proven that it occurred during transportation. Although the boat transport company will also most likely survey the boat, ensure they sign your version prior to departure.
After boat transport
Inspect the boat rigorously, as soon as possible, in order to identify any damage. Should any damage have occurred, contact the transport company immediately to avoid any complications. If you used Shiply, remember to leave feedback when the service is over, so that others can be informed from your experience.
